What is Rattan?

Rattan is a palm that grows in a vine-like manner, mainly in Indonesia, but also in other parts of the world. The stem, which can range in diameter from several millimeters to 5-7 centimeters, is used extensively in furniture making. The inner core strand of rattan, once separated from the main stem, is used for wicker furniture. This core can be stained or painted, however, the finish will only be skin deep which would mean scuff marks showing through. This is why HQF do not use this type of rattan.

What are Synthetic Rattans?

Synthetic Rattans have recently been developed that allow the visual experience of the furniture to be the same, but that have a longer shelf life. The colour or stain run's right through them thus not showing scuff marks or fading. Synthetic rattans are more durable than the plant and require less maintenance. There are two types of synthetic fibre – cheaper PVC varieties that only colour the surface of the fibre or Polyethylene fibres that have colour running through them. There is the added advantage that synthetic fibres do not damage the environment in terms of deforestation. 

HQF’s Synthetic Rattan Furniture

This is produced in Indonesia utilizing the Viro premium, synthetic polyethylene fibre. Viro is highly flexible, UV and weather resistant, is insensitive to temperature differences ranging between -25C-70C, is 100% recyclable, has excellent memory characteristics and is resistant to chlorine and salt water. It is strong and durable, recyclable, washable and maintenance free. This means it can be left outside year round.  

Viro fibre is guaranteed for 3 years from delivery, to withstand fading, weathering or cracking.

With careful attention to scale, proportion and ornamental detail, we are able to develop a rare sense of appropriateness that results in furniture which calms the senses and relaxes the mind. All our glass tops are 8mm tempered. All products are designed and manufactured to strict quality standards and are inspected numerous times throughout the manufacturing process, including a final inspection prior to packing. All our furniture is made with a 6mm fibre, tightly woven around an aluminium frame, that is maintenance free rather than steel or stainless steel frames that require corrosive sealing and monthly maintenance.
