Our Teak

What is Teak?

Teak is a hard wood grown mostly in tropical areas like India, Indonesia and Burma. Teak contains many natural oils, rubber and silica which combine to make a waxy, naturally water repellent hard wood that is durable, stable and termite resistant. It has been used for millennia in the marine industry and Teak beams have been found in 1000 year old temples in Asia, its oils are also used medicinally. Its properties make it a perfect wood for outdoor furniture. Teak is graded depending on what part of the trunk it comes from, its colour and imperfections. Grade A Teak is from the centre of the trunk, has a rich golden colour and hue, beautiful grain and is virtually free from knots and other imperfections. Do not confuse Asian Teak with Pacific, as the Pacific is much paler and less durable.

HQF Teak

HQF only uses original 40 year old A Grade Teak directly from the plantation of Perum Perhutani, Java, Indonesia. This Teak plantation is managed and maintained by the Indonesian Government. This aged Teak, taken from the centre of the trunk, is kiln dried to 12% moisture levels, so that you get only the best quality Teak furniture. HQF does not treat its Teak with any chemicals, stains or dyes, as none are required and often these are used to cover poor quality timber with imperfections. Untreated Teak furniture will fade to a silvery grey colour over time, however, as this is only on the surface, the original colour can be restored with fine sanding.
